Challenge

Jamestown, LP is a Real Estate Investment and Management Firm known for transformation of space and commitment to community. Before embarking on the redevelopment of a portion of the Navy Yard Charleston, they prioritized understanding and the need to document its rich history. This foundational step ensured that the redevelopment would respect and reflect the unique heritage of the place. This would require finding individuals who worked, were related to or were closely associated with the Navy Yard while it was in operation.

Solution

Navy Yard Charleston enlisted our expertise to create a collection of oral history videos capturing the untold stories of Charleston's Navy Base through first-hand accounts. The films were developed as a collaborative partnership with the Historic Charleston Foundation, which would preserve them in their archives. This initiative aimed to document and honor the Navy Base's history for future generations.

Strategy

This was a phenomenal endeavor requiring deep collaboration and trust-building. We partnered with Navy Yard Charleston’s communications team, the Historic Charleston Foundation, the City of North Charleston, local historians, and Navy Yard community members. A lot of truth-telling and trust-building occurred before a single camera was turned on. By fostering open conversations, we built a shared vision, ensuring the project respected the community's history. This groundwork was essential to producing authentic and meaningful oral histories.

Result

Amazing Success! The project culminated in a successful screening at the Navy Yard, where all stakeholders connected over the shared history. Connections by all were made. Jamestown gained valuable insights, the Historic Charleston Foundation enriched its archives, and the local community became deeply involved in shaping the Navy Yard's future. The films serve as a powerful testament to history, fostering pride and connection.
